I don't recommend this day trip, on the principle that it is more difficult to orient oneself in a large city than in a small one. I would choose Orvieto as an alternative. Moreover, Naples, while attractive and interesting it itself, practically begs a longer stay so that one can visit the various Roman ruins, such as Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Plug in Roma and Napoli into: http://www.trenitalia.com/.
You decide which trade off between the cost and the travel time you care to take.

I've been to Naples as a daytrip from Sorrento, with a stop at Herculaneum, and really enjoyed it. If you confine yourself to the old center, and some great pizza, you can capture a lot of atmosphere and some remarkable churches (and remarkable pizza).
Depending on your travelling style, you might be able to add in Herculaneum as well.
The fast trains Rome-Naples are expensive (over 40e) and take 70 minutes. The slower trains cost half that or less and take just over two hours (though the mini-fares on www.trenitalia.com start at 9e, even on the fast trains, they say). To save money if you can't get a mini fare, take the slower trains, leave plenty early, and come back late. This is very doable (we once did Rome-Capri and back, taking the ferry to Capri from Naples, and with dinner in Sorrento on the return).

I have been to Naples for one day, and it was exactly what i wanted to see, given the fact that i had limited time.
We took the train from Rome, not the super express one, which was much more expensive, but we arrived in Naples early enough, to have a whole day to spend in the city.
If OP wants to go to Naples for a day, it is doable, so recommending Orvieto instead makes no sense.....

Thanks, I love that website GAC and when we get to Naples I was planning on getting on the HOHO tour bus.
I want to purchase a mini fare there and just pay regular on the way back to Rome.
