Calling all eagle-eyed young-brained readers of Italy trip reports...
It's hell getting old. And I realize these are about as longshot as longshots get, but...
Years ago (2007? 2009?) I read a trip report here of a frequent Italian traveler. I was thinking it was MonicaPileggi. Then I thought maybe ekscrunchy. Now I'm just lost.
This trip report had a passage on a lunch that was consumed, I believe in Montepulciano. It described an outdoor terrace that looked out over the Tuscan countryside. The food sounded fabulous. I think the restaurant might have been attached to a winery.
If this rings a bell with anyone...
Second, more recent. Maybe in the last year (and I have absolutely NO idea why I didn't save this link!), possibly Montepulciano also, maybe Montalcino. Someone wanted to go to a highly-recommended place for lunch (I want to say this was a female poster who was traveling with her adult son.). The recommended place was closed and they ended up across the street. (They had a private guide who was driving them, I'm pretty sure.)
Whatever the place was "across the street" sounded fabulous and I believe they had an antipasti platter or maybe a cheese platter.
I know...I know. These could probably be two of any 400 trip reports. But if these made an impression on me, who knows, maybe some Fodorite remembers more detail than I. Really, Fodorites never cease to amaze me!

I thought most of Monica's reports were cruises departing from Italy. You might try searching her screen name and seeing if she has a list of trip reports.

stokebailey--BINGO on the second item! Yahooooo! YOU ROCK!!! That IS the 2nd trip report I was looking for. SO happy! nancythenice. That's it!
I don't think the other restaurant I'm looking for is La Porta. But it could be the Ristorante Pulcino.
However, I am almost positive the trip report I'm thinking of was by a solo female traveler. So, onward I search. Probably not here anymore, but I'll keep searching!

(Hey, I live vicariously through other Fodorites..whenever I am not in Italy.)
I knew that nancythenice trip report was the right one almost immediately because I also remembered the poster stating that her son had been to Italy before. And the home run was I remembered the part about them staying at a B&B with Japanese guests.
Guess I'm not as old as I thought I was!!

From my old, old Italy report:
"For a tiny town, Monticchiello has an interesting history including one event from World War II. On April 6, 1944, the Prefect of Siena, during the Fascist Republic, dispatched 450 available men to Monticchiello, to confront a small group of partisans camped around the town. The Fascists were forced to retreat, but revenge was on their mind. The next morning at dawn, a German division reached Monticchiello with orders to find and shoot all the inhabitants. Soldiers broke into the houses, rounded up the people and lined them all up against the wall outside the town gate for execution. Thanks to the intervention from the German wife of one of Monticchiello's landowners, and the help of a priest, Don Marino Torriti, the execution was averted. A monument now commemorates the event, which is on the wall intended for their executions.
Tracy and I, however, came in peace. Of course, not before terrorizing citizens with some more erratic driving. Reaching the gate and realizing I could go no further, I proceeded to back down the hill from whence I came (using the reverse ring to accurate perfection). We walked up the hill to the Osteria La Porta near the gate into town.
We got a table on the patio with incredible views and even more incredible food. Now here is a shock, I ordered Ravioli alla Pecorino. The tomatoes on the Pomodoro Bruschetta tasted like candy. The ravioli was incredible. We could have dined here for every meal, but a German film crew was setting up to shoot a movie for the next few days, and the restaurant would be closed. An interesting dichotomy don’t you think? Sixty years ago Germans came to Monticchiello to shoot its citizens, now they were coming to shoot a movie. Quite an improvement, I must say."

monica- if you're still hanging- it seems I may have combined my memory of one of your trip reports with one from somewhere else. But I most definitely remember that the poster had been seated at an outdoor table that overlooked the valley.
SO, Bingo #2!!! Your notes on walking up to, and dining in, Montefioralle! That was it!

I just saw this posting. Yes, my outdoor lunch in Montefioralle had great views of the countryside.
