3 days in Ulaanbaatar - Hotel, etc.

Hello,

My husband and I have just booked a RTW ticket and will be spending 3 nights in Ulaanbaatar in July. I wish we'd have more time in Mongolia, but this is a frequent flyer ticket and we had to take what was available. We can always return for a lengthier trip if we want to!

I searched the forums here and couldn't find a lot of hotel information for Ulaanbaatar. If I missed something obvious, I apologize in advance! Somewhere online I read about the Bayangol hotel. Has anyone stayed here? Is there another hotel you recommend? We don't need luxury - just clean, conveniently located, private bathroom, hopefully staff that can speak some English if we have a few questions about getting around. We'd like to keep the rate under $150 a night - closer to $100 if possible. (This is a long trip and we're trying to economize a little!)

Also, is there a company you can recommend that could do a day trip out into the countryside, perhaps Terelj National Park or Bogd Khan National Park? Which park would you recommend? We'll have two full days in Ulaanbaatar. I believe we'll be there for the big Nadaam there as well. What is the best way to see this - perhaps a guide for a day?

Thanks so much in advance for any help you can provide!

I stayed in a room in a private house, so can't help with a hotel. I would definitely recommend getting out of town. I booked this part of my trip through Passport Travel in Australia - http://www.travelcentre.com.au/trave...olia_index.htm - but that was more for the Russian train tickets and I dont remember who they used for the Mongolia leg. If you check a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide guidebook you should find some local operators.

Thanks, thursdaysd! I'll check out those guidebooks. I'll look at the Passport Travel site as well.

Back in 2008, we stayed in the Ulaanbaatar Hotel. http://www.ubhotel.mn/

Which we found quite adequate as a hotel. We were on a tour group trip with www.nomadicexpeditions.com we checked in and out at least three times, and we got different rooms each time. Although there were some issues, we found them very clean and large.

The location of the hotel is also perfect, within walking distance of most of the major museums, and just next to the square.

I also highly recommend Nomadic Expeditions, they have an office in town or I'm sure you could prearrange a trip.

There are many tourist offices in UB, and if you waited until you were there, I'm sure you could arrange something there.

But if you'll be there during Ndaam I'd prebook.

Thanks, SavTrav! I'll look at the Ulaanbaatar Hotel and see if they have any availability. Thursdaysd, I will definitely prebook since it will be Nadaam!

Thanks again to you both for your help!
