Hello...

Any ideas on the expected temperature in those three cities the first week in May?

The first two hostal web sites I looked at did not mention air conditioning. Should I be requiring that?

[I was in Madrid in mid-May 2006 when it reached 98 F.]

Not much different from last year.

About the same as next year.

Will a night in or two in a 95 F room ruin your vacation?

Yes - you definitely need AC. We have been there a couple of times in the 2nd half of April and temps were in the high 80s and some 90s. Hotel pools were opena and when we got to Marbella people were on the beach and in the sea. (Of course it could be not quite so hot - but are you willing to take the chance?)

One trip we went on to Mardrid which was almost 100 in early May. (Absolute hell - even with AC!)

I've traveled many times in late April and early May to these locations (Granada, Cordoba and Sevilla). Perhaps I've been lucky as I've never been when it was more than a high in the low 80's farenheit in the first week of May (2009). I was actually quite comfortable without air conditioning. I've been on other trips where it was rainy and mid-60's the first week of May (2011). You just don't know.

I can't resist telling my story related to this topic. After I graduated from college, I went back to spend the summer (and maybe forever) in Sevilla. I had been there for a semester in college and loved the city. I stayed in a cheap Hostal in Barrio Santa Cruz and not only did it not have AC but I didn't even have a fan! The idea of a siesta was obviously ludicrous, I'd be out until 3 a.m. or so and then get "baked" out of bed by 7 a.m. I couldn't do it now, but it was still an outstanding summer!

Why take a chance and be miserable.Yes,make sure there's A/C,get up early,walk on the shady side of street when possible, rest and take a siesta, go out once again when the sun goes down and lastly drink,drink,drink plenty of water!

Kimeryl - I believe the poster was speaking about the first week of May and not the middle of summer (ie. July/August)

In the middle of summer the temps in those cities are often 100 and higher. I remember seeing an exhibit in a museum about one summer in Seveille when the temps was higher than 110 degrees for 22 days in a row.

Also - for many peopl temps of 85 require AC (I can;t sleep if the room is more than 70 - and yes we run our home AC fromMay through Oct in NY).

Based on past 15 years statistics for the first week of May:

Granada: Average highs between 62 and 80F, night lows between 44 and 52F (you could be in more need of an owen than an air conditioner).

Sevilla and Córdoba: Highs 71-82F and lows 50-58F.

Thanks kimhe - this is exactly the weather I've experienced in my beginning of May trips. Never uncomfortable warm and even jacket weather in the evenings. A great time for a visit!
