Need air booking help / Venice / sicily/rome

I could use air-booking help. We are actually finally getting closer to actually nailing down our trip schedule !

We arent expecially well-off, and dont have a lot of flying experience. Only short round trips in the us.

Heres our latest plan.
We fly into rome from chicago
3-4 nights in rome
4-5 nights in florence
( havent decided on venice yet)

Then we would like to fly from florence or venice, to palermo for the remaining 4-5 nights of the trip.
We have to return to rome to fly home.

So heres the actual question.
I dont think we have to waste a day going back to rome in order to fly to palermo. Can we fly from venice or florence to palermo? And then can you return to rome to fly home?
Do you have to round trip fly in and out of the same two cities or can you fly out of one to palermo and return to another ?

And if we can do that, how would we go about it? We booked our original flights on orbitz.
So do we go back there to find florence/palermo/rome?
Or do we go directly to the smaller airline sites ?
Or a travel agent?

Sorry if these are obvious dumb questions. We just dont fly much at all.

I would like any suggestion. Someone told me there are smaller airlines ( windjet) that will travel within italy faily cheaply

There are quite a few budget airlines (beware of baggage limitations) that fly to Palermo from Italian cities and from Palermo to Rome. You can book one-way flights on any of them. Go to www.skyscanner.net to see what is available between various pairs of cities. I don't think there are flights out of Florence to Palermo, but there are out of Pisa and Venice.

If you are flying into Rome, why don't you take air one or easyjet to Palermo. Then you can fly from Palermo to Florence and then take the train to Venice.

The most logical way to do it with the fewest changes of hotel is to go to Florence by train immediately on arrival, continue by train to Venice, fly to Palermo, fly to Rome, be in position to fly home.

I would rather go to Catania, sicily than Palermo. Just my preference. If you do go to Palermo, bring a umbrella because the heavy sea fog rolls in around three in the afternoon. Also, had trouble exchanging money.

I look on Kayak.com for the best schedules and prices, then book with the airline directly. For smaller airlines within Europe look at www.whichbudget.com and www.skyscanner.com

I think the smaller airlines only let you book through their own Web sites.

If you plan to visit Palermo and Taormina, fly into Palermo and out of Catania (or vice-versa) to save time and avoid backtracking.

There are many more options available for getting to Palermo or Catania from Rome, than there are from Florence.

Check which airlines by using www.skyscanner.net , enter "Rome" or "Florence" as your departure and "Italy" as destination, select "whole month" and "one way" and you will see the variety of airlines on each route and the approximate costs for a one way flight each day of the month. You can either book on Skyscanner or go to the airline site that offers what you want.
