Driving N. Lake Tahoe to Yellowstone, Tetons, Sedona

How long, which route, any special places to see/stay? Traveling in July, party of two, prefer a spontaneous trip, will we find a room or cabin?

Have visited threads on Yellowstone and Tetons -route from there to Sedona?

About 9 hours from N. Tahoe to Idaho Falls. Make sure you leave Reno with a full tank of gas. The Great Basin Highway (US 93) is 117 miles of very desolate highway from I-80 to I-84 in Idaho. You should be able to find some lodging in the Idaho Falls area. Enter Yellowstone through West Yellowstone, MT.
Plenty to see in Yellowstone/Tetons without stretching the trip clear to Sedona.

You will find no accomodations inside Yellowstone if you don't make reservations. The park will fill up in July.

Another long long, multiday drive from Tahoe or Yellowstone to Sedona. Not worth it to me.

Skip Sedona for this trip.

How many weeks do you have? Tahoe City to YNP is a loooooong haul (Almost 1000 miles). Grand Teton to Sedona is a loooooong haul (about 900 miles).

They don't make sense all in the same tirp unless you have a LOT of time.

If you do have the time and the inclination for long drives - also include the Grand Canyon when you get down to Sedona.

If you wanted to add another beautiful destinaton - you might consider getting up real early at North Tahoe - and driving beyond Idaho Falls - another 3 hrs or so to Sun Valley. A bit longer but worth it IMO - and we did it once.

The nearby Craters of the Moon is also cool.

Thanks, folks. Am in Tahoe for family reunion and live in Sedona...thought to do Yellowstone and Tetons but no rooms in the park...how to get home yet avoid the long, desolate Nevada drive.

Well there is the Great Basin NP in Nevada, then you could head to Capitol Reef and either Arches and Canyonlands or hwy 12 and Bryce and Zion and North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Or you would drive to SLC ( no way really to avoid that long desolate NV drive) and then head over to Vernal where you could visit the Dinosaurs and then head south to Grand Junction and then to Ouray/SIlverton and Durango in CO.

Lots of options.

You could take 191 south from Yellowstone all the way to Moab and visit Arches and Canyonlands then head south to Monument Valley and on to Sedona without hitting Nevada at all.

Oh as to in park lodging at Yellowstone, keep calling as people make reservations a year in advance and then cancel when the time gets close.

The only way I see to avoid Nevada on the way to Yellowstone is to take 89 north out of Truckee to 49 NE to get to US 395.
US 395 will take you all the way to US 20 near Burns Oregon.
Take US 20 through Boise.
I wouldn't pass up Yellowstone because of no reservation in the park. If you have to, spend 1 night in West Yellowstone and another night in Jackson.
I like emalloy's idea of US 191 through Moab on the way home.

I think the OP meant avoiding the NV drive getting from Lake Tahoe to Sedona and Yellowstone was just an option that popped in to mind. Right?

Have you spent a lot of time along the CA coast? That would be another option. Down the coast and across from the LA basin. Or, down 395 which is gorgeous to Vegas and on to Sedona.

Or how about going from Tahoe to Yosemite to Sequoia NPs, pop into Laughlin on your way back to Sedona? http://g.co/maps/twykp
