4 digit pin card in Spain

I am confused about the 4 digit pin card in Spain for withdrawing money from an ATM. If Bank of America has locations where we are going, why couldn't I just use my BofA card and plug in my 4 digit pin code?

I read that Spain is not generally using these 4 digit pin cards and then I read somewhere else that they are.....someone please enlighten me.

I think you are confusing atm/debit cards with chip & PIN credit cards. Your ATM card w/ your PIN will work just fine to withdraw cash.

All you need to do is let BofA know you'll be using your ATM/Debit/Cash card in Spain, and access your account using your normal pin number. What you need to do is to check your daily limit to see how much you are allowed to withdraw in a 24-hour period.

Bank of America does not have locations where we are going = Spain. What they have in other selected countries are global ATM alliance partners https://www.bankofamerica.com/search...l+atm+alliance . Spain is not one of them.

The Bank of America has a WEB page answering common debit card usage questions:

http://www.bankofamerica.com/deposit...ate=lc_faq_ATM scroll down to Using your Debit Card or ATM Card in international countries.

The 4 digit pin question is answered under Can I use my debit card or ATM card in a foreign country? entry. I have a B of A account and I have used my debit card with 4 digit pin number.

If there is no global alliance partner in Spain, what do you end up paying? It is covered in FAQ What are the fees for using a debit card or ATM card in a foreign country?

The notification of oversea usage mentioned by Robert2533 is covered by FAQ What should I do if I plan to travel internationally and use my ATM or debit card?

The type of account you can access from Spain is covered in FAQ What accounts will I have access to when using a foreign ATM? Some people, including my branch customer service, incorrectly assured me that I could get money from a savings account (the only account connected to my ATM card) if it was primary. What the FAQ above says is correct. It has to be a 1) primary account and it has to be a 2) checking account.

Greg: a great, concise answer on a topic that generates much confusion. When in doubt, read the directions.
