Where can I buy Egyptian cotton while in Egypt? Anything else to look out for?
There was an article in the IHT about jewellery designer Azza Fahmy; Casual Cairo; have you heard about her?

Azza Fahmy jewelry is fabulous, but be ready for the price to be up fairly high. I personally don't own any of it, but I admire it a great deal. She has stores around town. I know of one in Maadi and another in Zamalek. There are probably others.

I do not ever recommend anyone buy Egyptian Cotton in Egypt necessarily.... but it depends on what you want it for? Do you want to buy it on the bolt to sew yourself? If so you might try the Wikala el Bala Market. It is a fabric market, but probably you would be over whelmed if you tried to go there alone. What is there, is primarily sheeting fabric on the bolt. It works well for shirts as well. If you know where to go, there are some outlets for good towels, but most are a synthetic blend.

If you want sheets made from Egyptian Cotton, go to JC Penney in January for the Jan White Sales and look for the Egyptian Cotton label. You know if it says it is Egyptian Cotton on a label in America, it must be Egyptian Cotton. This way you will get sheets that fit your American sized bed and pillows. If you are not in America, I still suggest you look at home for this product, or again buy it on the bolt and sew them yourself to fit your bed.

Regarding linen/towels... reminds me of visit to Turkey, also known for these items, when out for dinner with local Turkish couple. As some years earlier they lived and been educated in the States, still had to ask: 'where in Turkey do you purchase linens?' ... receiving the answer: 'when we visit in the States, for more choices, colors, sizes, overall quality, and the prices are better.

We did visit the area of the Cairo markets where fabrics were sold, hoping to purchase some and even though I had some experience in this field... totally overwhelmed and honestly didn't find the quality to be all that good. Certainly not for sheets if we wanted to have these custom-made, besides the fact that there are special looms to manufacture sheets to proper mattress-size without seams.

Sometimes, there are certain items that are best purchased at home - gemstones, linens... even foreign designer apparel - where choices, quality and prices work in your favor.

I don't have any idea if they are less expensive here in the stores or on line. They are expensive here in the stores, to me, but I suppose it's all from where you stand.

Can't comment specifically about the Assa Fahmy offers, but from my experience - if as some other companies located overseas that have items online or in your home country (shops/online, etc.)... the selection is different/limited and prices much higher. Like anything else, you've got to know what it is you're puchasing, quality and value for what you pay... also the return policy.

Travelline - I am VERY curious - 1) where did your wife get the sheets? 2) how much did she pay, and for what? 3) has she tried them on your bed, and if so, do they fit?

I ask all of these because I find American Queen Sized sheets are slightly smaller than Egyptian Queen sized sheets, and I wonder if that is her experience too? I think the other sizes are also not exactly true to American sizes. Also, Did she buy only flat sheets? Fitted Sheets? (only the fitted will show any major size difference) And, did she get what she expected when she opened it all up? Sometimes the pillow cases are a bit odd. Were the prices really better than say a JC PENNEY Winter White Sale price?

My wife had the same flood of questions and she searched for the information and she found it very confusing to know how to pick the right size and you know that there is no absolute standard measurement for beds While the top measurements are rather consistent from maker to maker, there is some variation. So she came to an end of measuring the bed carefully, noting the dimension from top to bottom, side to side, and the thickness of the mattress. Some are wider than others or longer.
We bought the highest thread counts; 1000 threads per square inch. King size fitted sheets and the pillow cases and duvet covers have a beautiful one row cord detail, with envelope style opening and hand sewn ties. With rate 210 $ from Cotton House (Shop name)
