Help with lodging choice at Vic Falls

I am planning my second Africa trip for this June/July (spent August 2011 in Kenya/S. Africa) and will include a stay at Vic Falls. I am traveling solo and prefer something fairly upscale/nice. I am trying to choose between Victoria Falls Hotel and the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. Any comments that might help me out?

VFSL is a quality experience. Period! VF Hotel is nice, but reminded me of all the colonial aspects of So Africa of the sixties and seventies!

Safari Lodge stands out. Fantastic views from room, convivial bar, dining room of game rich waterhole, unspoiled wilderness, only hotel facing west to see the sunset. Vic Falls hotel can be lonely as no easy meeting place like vfsl Buffalo Bar. This is much more authentic africa and they have a shuttle into the town just 5 minutes away on the hour. Go to vic falls hotel for a terrace lunch or evening cocktail and walk the corridors for half an hour to take in the history, but that's enough. Also pop your head into the Livingstone Room (grand dining) but again it would be lonely to eat there alone. Overall youre much better off at VFSL. Have a meal also at Ilala Lodge, great food.

If you want to be in town and be able to walk to the Falls, you might consider staying at Ilala Lodge... nice place.

I stayed at Illala Lodge and liked it a lot - with the exception of service in the restaurant which I found to be inattentive to the point I would rate it as poor. But the rest of the staff was helpful and friendly, the rooms very nice and it's close to the falls.

Last year i visited Zambia and stayed at the Royal Livingstone Hotel. It was pure luxury. It is located on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. Service was excellent. The rooms are very well appointed and there is always someone on duty at the tour desk that will arrange anything for you. The grounds are spectacular. I highly recommend you visit their website.

Right next door to the Royal Livingstone Hotel is the Zambezi Sun, a very nice and reasonably priced alternative resort. It is right at the falls and has its own private entrance. Its location is superb.

My room was - at my request - at the back of the hotel and I could hear the falls and see the mist from the falls from my room. On my first night there I awakened during the night to see the almost-full moon shining thru' the mist. Early the next morning I awoke and watched from my bed as the morning light turned the mist from purple to orange to pink. Just beautiful!
