Rome to Ostia Antica by public transportation: Update?
The URL below gives comprehensive directions to travel from Rome to Ostia Antica by metro and train. It was posted by ParadiseLost (Walter) in June, 2004. We may be attempting this day trip (if the weather gods are with us) while we're in Rome next month, and I'm wondering if there have been any changes to the transportation for this itinerary. And many thanks to Walter for first posting it more than six years ago.

Hi Betsy - No, there is no change in the route.
As Walter says, Ostia Antica trains leave from Piramide station - reachable by metro Line 'B' from Termini/Colosseum.
Services are frequent - so you will be there in under an hour.
Hope this helps ...

We've found this very helpful....

I did read of a price rise being planned for the bus/train tickets at the start of 2012, but for now they're still €1 - a bargain indeed?
Afterwards, you may have time to visit the medieval "borgo" and see the castle....

...and perhaps even for lunch at this place, which is just outside the walls?

We just got back (trip report forthcoming) and would like to point out that there are other options. We stayed near Piazza Navona so Metro Line B wasn't that convenient. Using the route planner on the ATAC site (http://www.atac.roma.it/?lingua=ENG) I realized that taking the #30 bus to CAVE ARDEATINE (which is on top of Porta S. Paolo (the departure point for the Roma/Lido train) worked better for us.
We found the public transportation very easy to use in general.

I don't know the status of the trains now, but a week ago, we had to take a bus from somewhere on the train line because the train was not running all the way to Ostia Antica. We didn't figure this out until our train started going backwards! I don't know if this is still the case, it may be back up and running - there was a flood in Rome so perhaps that was the issue.

Hello Betsy, you probably read the SF Chron and saw this but just in case you didn't here is the website for the NonCatholic Cemetery in Rome. It is a lovely and relaxing place to visit.

Besty -- you might be interested in my recent trip report. I've got some photos of Ostia Antica linked as well. Have fun.
