New to this safari stuff....

I've just booked our trip for next July for me and my 18 yo daughter. We over night at the Intercontinetal then on to Sausage Tree Camp in Zambia, then Royal Livingstone at Victoria Falls, then to Jabulani in SA and last to Londolozi. My question is do we have any safety issues by being two women traveling alone? More specifically about Sausage Tree Camp.

I've read everything I can find from previous travelers on that camp and nobody has had anything to say about the open air bathrooms or showering outside in the winter. A leopard had been sighted in camp and what is to keep one from scaling that bathroom wall? Or a person for that matter. Has anyone been there?

You have nothing to worry about. The animals are wild and don't want to have interactions with people. No safety issues, either. You are in very remote areas and the staff will make sure you are safe. Just don't put yourself in harm's way. Once you are escorted to your tent, stay put. The bathrooms are perfectly safe at night, and there are lights. The reason you can't find any safety problems is they are so very few and far between. Really, no worries.

My advice re showering outside in winter - daytime showers! AM or PM showers can be cold! It's warm during the day.

Lucky leopard sighting. Trust me, you would love to see it!

Sounds like a lovely trip with your daughter! Have fun.

Two women traveling alone no more issue on safari than anywhere else in the world.

Big cats are not the worry. Elephants and buffalo are. You are going to love your safari.

You should be fine. I have sent three women from our company by themselves to Sausage Tree camp three differenct times over the years. They also stayed alone in their tents. Your risk of safety issues is much higher in a major city.

Fear elephants but don't show it. Respect all other animals.

I just returned from Sausage Tree Camp. You will be fine. Most likely you will shower during the day, as showering in the AM or PM is to cold. I never once worried about our safety. You have a intercom system in your room to call the staff should you have any concerns/worries and someone will come to your room immediately. The staff is very aware if an animal is anywhere close to your room and sends a staff member to escort you to a meal, etc.

You will have a wake-up call around 5:30-6:00 for a buffet style breakfast, followed by a game drive. Back by 12:00 for lunch, then time to relax until around 3:00. (I would usually shower at this time). Around 3:00 you show up for a snack and start another activity and then return around 7:00 ish for dinner around 8:00, if back early enough you can shower then. The only animals we saw at camp were elephants. Never saw a Leopard!/Lyon! Don't worry, you will love your safari!!!!

I cannot comment on winter outdoor showers as I was on Safari during summertime (December) and only stayed at one outdoor lodge during my visit. You will be very safe as the camp staff are very protective of the guest. The animal sounds during the night outside your tent are beautiful. Don't worry, any unpleasantries during the outdoor camp experience will soon be forgotten once you step foot onto the grounds of the Royal Livingstone Hotel (the place is amazing) and view the spectacular Victoria Falls. You may even encounter Zebras as you are escorted to your villa-like room. If time permits, I recommend the dinner excursion on the Royal Livingstone Train--it's a great way to end your trip in Zambia.
