Is there usually an airfare sale after Labor Day?
I don't fly enough to know the sale patterns and was wondering if the trend is to release airfare sales for fall/winter after Labor Day? Or have the sales already been released?
Just found out that we will have to travel during the Christmas holidays (likely Dec 16-26) from Buffalo, NY to Vancouver, BC. Wondering whether flights may be cheaper soon...currently $830pp for a 1-stop flight - ouch!
Appreciate any insight on this.

Airfare to/from/in Canada are very expensive, especially now with the Canadian dollar so high. Consider BUF-SEA (some flights just over $500), or go to London or Waterloo or Hamilton and fly Westjet (still at least $550 or so).
You're flying during Christmas holiday. I have doubts whether you'll see lower fares. If you have miles, this is the time to use them.

from $10 go up to Toronto take a direct to save
alternatively BUF SEA then take the SEATAC shuttle Vancouver
They always drop them after labor day.

Hi rkkwan! Thx a mint for the suggestion. I have some FF points I was saving for next year to Australia but that trip might not happen now. Guess I should check out what's available...unfortunately they're on AA which was great with their Quantas connection but not so fab for YVR...LOL!

Check flights from Chicago to Seattle. If you find a bargain, you can get from Buffalo to Chicago on the Lakeshore Limited for less than $70/pp. Leaves Buffalo/Depew shortly before midnight every day and arrives in Chicago usually before 10AM.
Amtrak has 2 trains and 2 buses from Seattle to Vancouver daily.
You can also rent a car in Seattle and drive to Vancouver as long as you return it to Sea-Tac.

Not sure about fare sales after Labor Day (and I am a very frequent flier). But I just saw a fare from ORD-ZRH drop over $200 within a few days time. I looked at it on Aug 29, and waited, and then looked today, and WOW... $200 less than it was on the 29th. No hesitation whatsoever! I bought it!

tomfuller - thx for your suggestions. Never thought to take Amtrak to Chicago, tho I took Lakeshore the other way this spring as a travel companion for my niece, from Buffalo to NYC. I have more time than $$ so I'll take a look at that Chicago Amtrak option.

If you really have more time you can ride Amtrak all the way for $243-$295 in coach. Getting a sleeper on the Empire Builder will be more expensive than flying.
In 2007 I rode the Empire Builder and the LSL all the way from Portland to Rochester and return. The Empire Builder splits in the middle of the night in Spokane. Half to Seattle and half to Portland. Your trip by train would be about 67 hours including a 4 hour bus trip to Vancouver. Don't forget your Passport.

Since October 2001 I have logged twice as many miles on Amtrak and ViaRail than I have in the air.
I've been to Churchill Manitoba twice by train.
If I have luxury of time and the train goes there I ride the train. The train is better than a "B" seat on a cross country flight.

That's awesome! And, you're the first person I've "met" who's been to Churchill!! Most people don't even know where it is. I went there a couple of years ago, to see the polar bears of course. The Tundra Buggy Lodge was outstanding.

I like trains as well... I've done the Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth, and the Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs.
But I don't always have the luxury of time... most of the time, flying just makes more sense for me.

Just reporting back that there were some sales but nothing that benefitted me.
I checked American and their partner Alaska Airlines but there were no mileage flights available at all.
Been watching the fares for the past few days and bit the bullet today.
Decided to fly a couple of weeks ahead and I'll be taking a Southwest flight from BUF > SEA, and catching a quickshuttle (with the fab convenience of SEA airport to YVR airport) to Vancouver. I saw the $189 fare on Delta, which I thought was amazing. On a whim, I decided to check SW and not only was the fare $7 less but the biggie is that I get 2 pieces of luggage free! ($55 saving) yippeee - as I'll be there for Christmas and will be sure to have lots of gifts and goodies with me. Just the airfare alone (including the cost of the $55 shuttle) saves me $100 over flying out of Toronto.
DH will be flying in and out on direct flights from Toronto on Westjet - savings of $130 which includes the cost of parking (vs. cab ride if departing from BUF). I'll be flying back with him my total savings (vs. flying out of and returning to BUF) is over $235! Wow, it pays to look at options.
