Does anyone have experience visiting cheesemaking sites in Vermont, especially around Burlington? We Know there is a map but am interested in personal favorites.

I know there was a cheese festival a few weekends ago at Shelburne Farms. Wish I had known about it beforehand and we would have made an effort to go. Maybe next year...

My husband and I were at Shelburne Farms the day of the cheese festival but unfortunately the tickets were sold out before we decided to go over to the Burlington area. I heard it was a great event and the weather was absolutely beautiful.
Shelburne Farms is definitely worth a trip to see the farm in general. They make good cheddar cheese.

We really have not visited many of the sites on the Cheese Trail, although years ago we lived only a few miles from the Crowley Cheese factory in Healdville near Rutland/Ludlow.

I have a lot of respect for the people who own the Vermont Butter and Cheese Creamery in central Vt. They have been making cheese for more than 20 years. They make some interesting products including quark. I don't think they are as much into the tour business as other cheese makers.

The best resource is the VT Cheese Council website which has a page devoted to the cheese trail: http://www.vtcheese.com/cheesetrail.htm Note that not all the cheese makers are open to the public. Also, a tip on the annual Cheesemakers Festival. It has a limited number of tickets and sells out early every year. The festival is in late July but tickets go on sale in March. It would be best to write a reminder in your March calendar page and keep an eye on their Facebook page for the announcement: http://www.vtcheesefest.com/
