Private cars vs. taxi from airport to Rome

I'm considering getting a private car instead of a taxi from Fiumicino to Rome, since the difference in cost doesn't seem to be much. I want to make sure I"m dealing with a reputable company, though, as I know there are quite a few of them (Rome Cabs, etc). Anyone have any experience with any of them or any knowledge of which ones are the best to deal with? Leaving in a few weeks, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I used Rome Cabs from the airport to central Rome and all was fine, right there, helped us find an ATM to get Euros and a bit of a guided tour on the way to the rental apartment. On the outbound, however, I don't know if they had the wrong address or what happened, but the car never showed and we ended up with a taxi after waiting more than 30 minutes for the car. When I got home I eamiled them about the miss and they said their records showed I was a no show. A disconnect somewhere.

I've used Limousine Service Rome, but they are cheaper ones that get good reviews. There is also a company with a similar name (s added to the end of service) that tries to take business from them that doesn't get good reviews, so beware. Rome Shuttle Limousine seems to get good reviews and is one of the cheapest ones.

The set fee for Comune Roma taxis was 40€, but they had applied for an increase to 45. I don't know if that's in effect yet, but the prices include luggage. Comune Fiumicino taxis can charge more.

I have used this service twice ,the first time from Tiburtina to my hotel near Via Coronari and the second time from my hotel to Ostia Lido.

I am going back to Rome the 4th of Sept. and I have already made a reservation with them..They are very reliable.

Hmmm...this is a tough one. We are renting an apartment and they have offered to arrange transfer for us with the car service they recommend (don't know the name, they're not saying) for 50euros. I trust these people as the reviews on their apartments are excellent and they've been great to deal with, and they say they just like this company and the drivers know how to get to the apartment (near Campo de Fiori/Piazza Navona), but I'm wondering if their recommendation is worth the extra 10 euros or so more (Rome Shuttle Limousine is 40 euros); my husband says to go with their choice, but I'm wondering if that's necessary. I guess the best way to ask the question is are there any car companies that people have said to stay away from?
Thanks to all for your help.

Personally agree with your DH.
For a few euros difference might stick with the company's reco
and pay with credit card someone with card will meet you atgate very comforting if a newbie.

Taking random recos from Fodors some trolls here not wise to save a euro or 2... Roma Cabs best in past for me

Though I pack light onebag.com and shuttle in to save a lot.

Have fun!

Just looked at the Terravision site that shows a nice bus from airport to downtown (near train station) for 4 euros! Has anyone actually used or heard of this option?

We booked a private car for Easter Sun day some years ago. It never arrived and we ended up taking a taxi.

Do you suppose it's turned up yet? (we'll be back in Rome in a few months!)

Terravision has been around for years and used to only sell tickets to people that used budget airlines (you had to show your boarding pass or ticket for one of the designated airlines). They no longer do that and cut their rates because of SitBusShuttle taking a lot of their business when they started a couple of years ago. There's also Cotral buses.

In the last 10 years i only use Airport Shuttle, and never had problems. They are reliable, have good prices and are always on time.
Here is their website : http://www.airportshuttle.it
