I will be attending a seminar at UCSC from July 3-30. Will not have a car, so will need to walk or bus to campus daily. Am wondering about the best sources to find lodging. I have some leads from program director--am skittish about using Craigslist. Are there any extended stay hotels in that area? I'd prefer not to spend over $1,200 for the month if that is feasible.

I think you should look into the leads from your program director. Craigslists can be okay if you are careful. I am sure you googled extended stay hotels??

You can also check www.VRBO.com but your budget might be a little low for the area.

Never stayed in this particular one but I do like the HI hostels. You can cook to save money vs. restaurants.

As far as I know that hostel only allows 5 night's stay.

Your best option is contacts from your program director. $1200 a month in summer in Santa Cruz is a pretty low budget and the school is probably used to connecting attendees w/ landlords.

Craigslist will have all the UCSC student summer sublets, so if you stay away from cl, you will miss all those deals that are right by campus. Follow up on your program director's leads, and if they don't work out, use craigslist. Just a postscript--I ended up staying at Hinds House, a Victorian extended stay guest house. I am paying $2300 total (taxes etc) for the cheapest room, but it is worth every penny. The location is fantastic in terms of having access to downtown, and I am much more of a downtown girl than a campus girl. A classmate gives me a ride to class every day; otherwise, I'd have been busing it to campus. Some of my classmates ended up with a variety of types of on campus lodging that range in price from $500 to $2000. $500 dollar man has to babysit a cat. They are disadvantaged in that they don't have easy access to downtown Santa Cruz, and there is nothing to do much on campus in the summer. Also the campus is huge--it's more of a state park than a campus. I am loving Santa Cruz and would recommend Hinds House to anyone needing extended lodging in Santa Cruz.
