New 1,000- and 2,000-colon bills in Costa Rica
The rollout of the new colon bills in Costa Rica is about a year behind schedule, (Surprise, surprise! 
) The new 1,000 and 2,000 bills began appearing this week. The old bills will be valid for general circulation until Sept. 1, after which time you'll have to exchange them in any bank. After Nov. 1, you can only exchange the old bills at the Central Bank in downtown San Jose. If you have bills left over from previous trips, beware. If you're traveling in the next few weeks, try to get rid of old 1,000 and 2,000 bills before you leave.
The new 20,000 bill was introduced several months ago as a new denomination entirely. The newly designed 5,000 and the new denomination 50,000 are scheduled to be introduced later this year, Like I say, the whole rollout is way behind schedule.
The new bills are smaller in size than the old series. Their widths are all equal; the lengths vary as an aid to the sight-impaired. They're quite attractive too.

ATM my colones at big banks only so as not to get

Costa Rica has beautiful currency. I especially like the 5000 colone note with the images that remind me of the southern zone. The new 20,000 note is also beautiful, with the hummingbird on it, but it doesn't seem widely used...

They do feel funny. They're polymer. They should last a lot longer than the 100% paper bills and not get as dirty. Does anyone remember when there were 50-, 100-, and 500-colon bills? They would stay in circulation so long and would get absolutely filthy.
