We will be arriving around 2 pm and our flight out to Sulawesi leaves at 9:25 am. Is it worth taking a hotel closer to town or is it easier to stay near the airport with (I assume) not as much to do? It's been a long time since I have visited Singapore and am not sure how long it will take to reach the airport in the morning. If going into town is better, any recommendation on a decent but not very expensive hotel? Is Changi Village the best bet if I need to be close to the airport? thanks for any help you can give.

Do go into the city. The city is quite close - maybe 20 minutes by taxi, and it takes the almost the same amount of time to get to/from Changi Village. And you'll pay more for the hotel in Changi Village than you would for a comparable hotel in the city.

SIN isn't that far from downtown, so you can basically stay wherever you want and just to the airport in the morning. There's also a Crowne Plaza at the airport attached to Terminal 3, but it's quite pricey. In fact, most hotels in Singapore are quite pricey recently.

I had an layover that's exactly the same length as yours, last November. I decided to stay at the Grand Mercure Roxy, which is halfway between SIN and downtown. It is a great hotel with a good price. The reason it being cheaper is that it's not in a tourist/shopping district AND it has no MRT (subway) service. HOWEVER, it does have a free shuttle to/from SIN, and it gets to the airport in 15 minutes. There are also frequent public buses to the Marina and City Hall/Raffles area. So, if you are okay with taking public buses, it is an excellent value.

There is a free tour bus from and to the airport, we flew Singapore Air so maybe that is free to those passengers I am not sure. There are tons of info on:http://www.changiairport.com/. We took public transport to town which is super easy. There is a transit hotel see http://athmg.com/ but we didn't stay there. It's not a bad idea since you have so little time. You can store your luggage in the basement of terminal 3. The restaurant in that basement serve pretty good Hanan chicken and rice.
There are also shower rooms for a fee which I took advantage of, outside the shower room but still part of the facility is a lounge with big comfy sofas, coffees, tea, snack etc, there were people spreading out napping there.
Sulawesi is on my radar so pl share some of your insight.

The transit hotel is VERY basic. With that much time, I wouldn't stay there.

There is a free tour offerred by Changi for people who are in Singapore for 4 hours or so. But with the time you have, take a taxi or the MRT into the city, get a hotel in the city and enjoy. You have most of an afternoon and an eveing. SIngapore is quite compact, so if you get a hotel near the MRT, the whole city is at your doorstep.

Thanks all. I think I will go into town and I will do a search on the Mercure. I also saw a reasonable rate for a new, I think, Ibis hotel that was under $100 including breakfast.

Johan, this will be our 4th trip to Sulawesi, but for diving, so I am not sure what you have in mind to do. If it's diving, I will be happy to answer any questions you have.
