My son is getting married in Antigua, Guatemala!

My son is getting married in Antigua, Guatemala in late May!

We will be staying at the Casa Santa Rosa for six days and would appreciate any helpful information regarding this hotel, restaurants, sights we shouldn't miss and anything we should know about being in this city. Thank you.

Also, here's a thread I started a few weeks ago with lots of great restaurant tips:

Have a great visit!

Thank you so much hopefulist for your response.

This will be our first time in Guatemala and also for most of our guests attending the wedding.

Should we concerned about safety, water, use of ATM's, walking at night from our hotel to the central part of Antigua, exploring outside Antigua?

Since we will be there for almost a week can you give me any "can't miss" things to see, to do or to eat?

How is the music/night life scene here?

Thanks!

You should be fine in the main tourist areas of Antigua but you could ride a tuktuk (golf cart taxi) back to your hotel at night. There is some street crime but most is crime of opportunity, like pickpocketing when there's a parade or a group watching street musicians (don't carry a wallet). Don't drink the water from the tap or brush your teeth with it; hotels should provide purified water for guests or you can buy it in the stores.

You can check out my 2007 and 2009 photos, blog, and travelogue below for ideas of what to do in/around Antigua:

A day trip or a quick overnight to Lake Atitlán would be nice if you can fit it in but there's plenty around Antigua to keep you busy.

Lots of music and a street lined with restaurants and bars - plenty there to keep you busy, too. Happy trails!

Where will the wedding ceremony be? The Santo Domingo has a new facility on top of the hill overlooking Antigua. The place is amazing, the views are incredible, the food...I haven't heard one good thing about it. I had breakfast there with friends and we were all disappointed. Still a nice place to walk around.

You will love your time in Antigua! I would suggest taking Elizabeth Bell's walking tour of the city as early in your visit as you can. You will have a different and much more in depth view of the city if you do it. If you are interested in nice vintage textiles go to the La Fuente Saturday morning market.Take cash and exchange it inside the bank, early in the day, and be wary of the ATMs. Have a wonderful week, what a lovely setting for a wedding.

Thanks to everyone who responded!

The wedding will be held in Las Capuchinas. We definitely will take the Elizabeth Bell walking tour. We also have four couples (friends) all staying at the same Casa Santa Rosa as us.

Any particular music venues that you would suggest?

Wow - that will be awesome! It's one of my favorite ruin sites in Antigua (that and San Geronimo). Can't wait to see pictures! (hint hint)

My brother and his family consisting of 3 adult couples and 4 children are interested in renting a 5 bedroom house right in Antigua. So far all they can find are homes 20 minutes out of the city. Any suggestions for them?
