driving Vancouver to Prince Rupert?

Because of ferry schedules, we are considering driving to Prince Rupert instead of taking the ferry from Port Hardy (Vancouver Island). Has anyone ever done this? Yes, I know it's 300 extra miles. I'm interested in what the roads are like...all trucks, passing lanes, speed limits?

Thanks!

Roads are fine no real issues Highway 16 along the Skeena west of Prince George is a tad narrow in places but not much of a concern the area is heavily wooded don't expect much for views.

Taking Highway 99 out of Vancouver north to Whistler cuts through the Coast Mountain range to Lilloet-some switchbacks but a gorgeous drive and does save some time over Highway 1 east to Hope and then north through the Canyon.

Some of my favourite views are of the benchlands along the north Fraser River from the Cariboo Highway-not at all spectacular just a unique combination of river land and agriculture.

The upgraded Road is fantastic with very little traffic. Jasper - Prince Rupert is one of the top railway tours in the world and the route generally paralells the road along the Skeena. The views ARE super. Plan to stop with a picnic lunch. Make sure your gas tank is full as there are no gas stations between Terrace & Prince Rupert.

Thanks, I really didn't expect to get replies on an esoteric topic like this. Looks like a fun drive!
