Ferries in Eastern Canada

We will be flying to Boston and then driving to New Brunswick, PEI, and Novia Scotia in July. We'll be going from Moncton to PEI over the Confederation Bridge, but the problem is getting off PEI. We want to take the ferry from Wood Islands to Caribou, but the website for this ferry is less than helpfull. It is not letting me get a one way ticket or any ticket at all. Is it too early?? Also, we want to take a ferry from Yarmouth NS back to Portland, ME. Is that possible?

I don't think you buy a ticket for the PEI ferry until you get there. And you may have to wait if there is a line. When we went, we ended up waiting for the 2nd ferry (so about 90 minutes).

There are no ferries from Maine to NS anymore. they've all closed down as unprofitable.

We will be touring PEI and NS in July. In December I contacted the ferry company and received the following reply :

"Good morning - we will not have our 2011 rates and schedules until mid-March 2011. Our website will be updated as soon as we have same confirmed at which time you will be able to make reservations. Kindest regards."

So I assume that their website will be up and running soon with schedules, etc. for the 2011 season.

You cannot prebuy a one way ticket on the ferry only return fare (unless they have changed it this year). I wouldn't worry about line-ups, not very usual you don't get on the ferry when arriving, unless there has been bad weather for previous crossings and the ferries haven't been running (very unusual) or it is a certain time of year (race week in Charlottetown). The Confederation (the largest ferry) can accomodate quite a few cars and runs every couple of hours.

As for one way or return, you only pay when you leave the island, either by the bridge or the ferry. So the one way fare is the same as the return fare. Therefore it seems that if you want to arrive by the bridge and pre-book the ferry to leave PEI, you have no option but to book a return ferry trip with any return date, and don't show up.
