If arriving at EWR at that time, I would do nothing else but the AirTrain to NJ Transit train, even with luggage. I did this last week and found it quite easy, and you can always get suck in tunnel traffic during rush-hour, easily doubling the time it normally takes to get into Manhattan. It's also one of the cheaper options.

Where in Manhattan are you going?

I live on the upper west side and always take a car service - using the GWB - even in rush hour it's faster/easier than taking the Air Train and train ad then fighting the subway.

But - it really depends on where you're going. For midtown - esp the west side - the train is probably fastest as long as you don;t have a ton of luggage.

hey, nytraveler, do you reserve a car or pick one up at the airport? Would one of the services be able to carry 5 people plus luggage? I'm in no way interested in taking the train and subway.

You have to reserve a car in advance - and for 5 people plus luggage you will need to get some sort of van or extra large SUV. Call Dial 7 or Carmel and ask them to give you a quote - and do realize that on top of the quote you will have to pay for the tunnel or bridge toll plus a 20% tip.

You can easily get cabs at the airport - but they won;t be able to hold 5 people plus luggage - and at rush hour the price can really run up.. And "car services" that tout at the airport are illegal and likely to gouge/cheat you.

For your group be prepared to pay about $100 total.
