Charlotte Airport. A Question About Transfers

I will fly from Pittsburgh to Charlotte on the first leg of my trip into Rome. What I cannot quite make out from the Charlotte airport terminal map is if I must go through an airport security check point to go from my arrival gateway to what I believe will be section D

I am assuming D as that is where the Duty Free shop is located.

Would someone please clarify this for me?.

Thanks

There is no additional security once you land in Charlotte. Just a walk between gates.

From the following map, it appears that there is a duty free store (called "World Passage") in Concourse D:

I wouldn't count on a big store, though. I've never even noticed it before.

You won't need to go through security again on your outbound flight but if Charlotte is your first point of entry back into the US then after you clear immigration and customs you'll have to go through security then. I just did it this past weekend returning from the Caribbean.

Well. Having this post moved has helped get me answers.
Thanks for helping me know a little more about the airport.

I only have an hour connection time on the way to Rome and was concerned about having to go through a second security and now I know I don't have to even think about that...unless my plane is late.

Thanks to all.

If your plane is late and you are coming in to concourse A or B, I would ask the flight attendant to have a skycart meet you at the jetway to take you to the interntional concourse. Maybe even if your plane is on time.

Hi Gretchen. The airport map doesn't make it look so big. Is it quite a distance to D from A or B? I guess the map could be deceiving.

It's not that bad, and there are moving walkways you can use. About a 5-7 minute walk. Not sure they'd let you use a cart unless you are very old and/or infirm anyway.

Brian, from someone whose flights ALWAYS leave from the end gates of the corridors, it is further than that!! The moving sidewalks are very short and only at the ends of the corridors.
And if you are in danger of missing an international flight they WILL pick you up--like Enterprise. LOL
It isn't Philadelphia--or even Pittsburgh.

Gretchen. I really appreciate your comments. I am using miles and would never have only allowed that much time between flights but I was told that all of the flights from Pittsburgh to Charlotte were booked for that day and I made my reservations months ago. They must allow only one or two award reservations because when you look at the seating chart the plane is almost empty.

Brian. I am not old or infirm but I don't like the one hour between flights and would rather know what I am getting into. I was concerned about security because I have implants and am always stopped and searched.

What I think I might do is on the day of the flight pay $50 each for myself and husband to take an earlier flight if there is room. Just arrive in Pittsburh way before the flight on which we are scheduled and hope to get out earlier. Better safe than sorry.

I think that's a good idea, if only to protect you from a late flight from Pittsburgh. As a heavy user of CLT, I think you'll find the distances exaggerated (unless you end up at the end of the dreaded E-terminal (unlikely from Pittsburgh) or are a slow walker. If you arrive early you can enjoy some time in the many rocking chairs, sample NC wines at the wine bar, or there are a couple spots with decent gelato. Have a good trip.

And for anyone else reading this in the future, the moving walkways are very extensive at CTL.

I'd call back and see if there are any freebie seats now before paying. But with all due respect to Brian, the moving walkways are nothing like what they have on long concourses in Denver, for example. I agree, it is probably "possible", but as one who almost missed her flight to Paris on a connection, it is not the way to begin a trip.

I really don't want to run to catch the plane. And maybe an hour will be enough time but I just like a little more time.
I cannot change my flights now unless I pay $150 each. And as I said there really are no earlier flights PIT-CLT on that day unless very early in the morning. But on that day, if there are seats available, they will allow me to pay $50 to fly earlier.
I really appreciate all the help.

Again, just in case anyone references this thread in the future, the distance from the far end of concourse A or B to the end of D is at most, 1/2 mile. And about 50% of that is covered by moving walkways (the entire Atrium area can be transversed by moving walkways). So you would have to move at 1 mph and skip all the moving walkways to take 30 minutes to make the trip. A person walking at a normal clip can easily make the trip in 10 minutes. Of course that does not include any gelato stops.

Well, here I am again going through Charlotte.
I originally was to fly from Boston to Pittsburgh after my international flight. But USAirways has cancelled the flight at 6:30pm.
They did place me on a 2:00 pm flight but seeing as I do not arrive in Boston until 4:45 that would be a little difficult.
I must take a connecting flight through Charlotte to Pittsburgh and I only have 40 minutes from touch down in Charlotte until the Pittsburgh plane leaves. At least I will be in the US and a night in Charlotte will not kill me. As 40 minutes is cutting it short to get off the plane from Boston and make it to the plane for Pittsburgh.

BTW. Last year we arrived at the airport in Pittsburgh early prepared to pay $50 to standby on an earlier flight to Charlotte. We were told that our original flight from Pittsburgh to Charlotte was already on a delayed schedule (which they failed to tell us) and if we wouldn't have arrived at the airport early we would never have made the connection to Rome from Charlotte. So we dodged the bullet there. And because they had delayed the flight we could fly on the earlier plane without paying.

Moving walkways there are helpful. Normally the people who walk faster like me, stay to the left of the walkway while the people who are not in a rush stay on the right. Not all understand this, but this is what is common in most airports that have walkways. And it is a lot quicker when you walk fast and best of all, does not seem to tire us out too much.

Since this thread is a couple of years old, things might have changed, so I'd like to ask if regular users of CLT think a 65 minutes connection time is doable for flight arriving from MSY (New Orleans) and departing CLT to LHR (London Heathrow). Never been thru Charlotte but I would be traveling on a Saturday or Sunday evening if that figures into the equation. Is it still correct that I wouldn't have to clear security as there's only one terminal?

I've never booked with that tight of a connection, but this flight on USAirways would save me at least $200 so I'm very tempted. Also departure and arrival times are attractive on top of the price differential.

Is this "Connection Suicide" just waiting to happen? Thanks in advance for replies.
