Best of Brooklyn

Did you know?

If Brooklyn wasn’t a borough of New York City, it would be the fourth largest city by population in the US (beating out Houston, TX).

The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883. A year later, P. T. Barnum led a troupe of 21 elephants, 7 camels, and 10 dromedaries from one side of the bridge to the other to literally stomp out rumors of the structure's instability.

Brooklyn, then known as Breuckelen, was founded by Dutch settlers in 1636 and named for a town in the Netherlands.

The borough has long been a haven for creative types: Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen, Jay Z, Spike Lee, and Jimmy Fallon were all born in Brooklyn.

Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert B. Vaux, who designed Manhattan’s Central Park, also designed Brooklyn’s 585-acre Prospect Park, which is considered to be their masterpiece.
