An interesting slice of Iceland's past has been well preserved on Viðey Island—a popular destination for people seeking peace, solitude, and a bit of windswept rural bliss. Before it was given international significance by Yoko Ono, who chose the island as the location of her Imagine Peace Tower, Viðey Island was mostly known at the home of Skúli Magnusson, the so-called father of Reykjavík, who, because of his keen sense of business, is largely considered responsible for the development of Reykjavík as Iceland’s capital city.
