Health and Safety

The main health advice for the rest of Peru also applies to this region: Don't drink the water (or use ice), and don't eat raw or undercooked food.

Theft can be a problem in crowded tourist areas, such as beaches, or on economy-class transport. Police are helpful to most foreign travelers, but procedures can be slow, so take care with your valuables. If you lose something important, like your passport, report it to the police and to your embassy.
