Muyuna Lodge

San Juan de Yanayacu, 140 km (87 miles) southwest of, Iquitos, Loreto, Peru

You have to travel 140 km (84 miles) up the Amazon and Yanayacu rivers to reach the Muyuna Lodge, poised at the edge of a seasonally-flooded forest; but on arrival, you can bed down in comfortable accommodations surrounded by exuberant tropical nature. Screened bungalows with river views and surrounded by trees have attractive tile bathrooms, cold-water showers, and porches with hammocks. The forest behind the lodge is lovely, too, and you can expect to see plenty of wildlife here—including cocoi herons, black-collared hawks, squirrel monkeys, and two species of dolphin—on guided hikes and on boat trips. The lodge also offers fishing tours. Kerosene lanterns provide light at night; only the dining hall, where hearty buffet meals are served, has electric lights and outlets for charging batteries for several hours each night.
