Second Home Peru

Why We Like It

Second Home Peru is a feast for the eyes and a relaxing oasis in a relatively loud and chaotic city. It is an authentic B&B with a no-nonsense proprietor, Lilian Delfin, who is there most mornings helping her guests plan their travels or resolve problems. It is within walking distance of the parks, museums, boutiques, restaurants, and nightlife that make Barranco Lima's most fun neighborhood.

Fodor's Expert Review

Hidden on a dead-end street a few blocks from Barranco's historic center, this B&B-cum-art-gallery in a refurbished, early-20th-century house is surrounded by tropical gardens, sculptures, and a sweeping Pacific view. The former home of eminent Peruvian artist Victor Delfin, it is run by his daughter, Lilian, who doubles as the concierge. Abundant artwork compliments the architectural details and inspiring views to make this one of Lima's loveliest lodging options.

Room

Each room is unique, though all of them have high ceilings, pine floors, original art and sculpted iron bed heads. Those on the second floor of the house have either ocean or garden views, whereas new "mirador" rooms, perched on the cliff below, have small balconies and jaw-dropping ocean views.

You Should Know Rooms in the house are very quiet, but the ocean view of the 'Mirador' rooms comes with a soundtrack of the waves and traffic below.

Bathroom

The varied bathrooms range from spacious to cramped, but they all have bathtubs and high ceilings.

You Should Know The two rooms with 'shared terrace' have tub and toilet in the room, behind a low wall.

Lobby

The house's ground floor has a small reception area and three airy halls with tile floors, plentiful polished pine and big windows that afford views of the back lawn and the Pacific Ocean. The main hall is flanked by a spacious breakfast room, the walls of which are covered with giant paintings by Victor Delfin, and another bright room that holds a collection of pre-Columbian ceramics.

Tip When the weather is nice, the back terrace and lawn are idyllic places to hang out.

Pool

Nestled at the edge of a ravine below the house is an eye-catching, tiled pool with a jaguar-head fountain at one end.

Dining

A sumptuous breakfast is served with an ocean view on the ground floor.

You Should Know Though this hotel lacks a restaurant, there are several good ones within blocks.

Ayahuasca (4-minute walk) is a popular bar in a refurbished historic mansion. La Candelaria (10-minute walk) offers peña shows on weekend nights that are a great way to experience Peru's colorful folk dances.
