If you know little about the history of Peru, a visit to this fortresslike museum is likely to leave you overwhelmed. The number of cultures tracked over the centuries makes it easy to confuse the Chimú, the Chincha, and the Chachapoyas. The three floors of artifacts end up seeming repetitious. The museum is more manageable if you have a specific interest, say, if you're planning a trip north to Chiclayo and you want to learn more about the Moche people. Except for a pair of scale models of Machu Picchu, the rooms dedicated to the Inca is disappointing.
