The rose-color Monastery of the Shoeless Brothers has been converted into a fascinating repository of colonial-era religious art. Room after room of this mazelike structure is filled with paintings dating back to the 16th century. There are four cloisters and two chapels, so it's easy to get lost here -- in fact, it's practically guaranteed. A highlight is the Capilla de la Virgen Carmen, entered through a doorway decorated to resemble a bright-blue baroque church. Inside is an altar that gleams with gold leaf. The kitchen still contains antique winemaking equipment, and the pharmacy is filled with glass-stoppered bottles of unidentifiable liquids. English-speaking guides are available.
