Everyone in town knows the Albergue, right at the train station, owned by exuberant longtime American resident and artist Wendy Weeks. Dark-wood rooms here are spacious but rustic, with historic black-and-white photos from the region. The lodging has homey touches like a wood-fired sauna, huge breakfasts, and a cozy sitting room. Reserve in advance: the place is popular with groups about to embark on, or just returning from, the nearby Inca Trail.

El Albergue Ollantaytambo (www.elalbergue.com) has been renovated recently, all rooms now have private bath, hot water 24hours, phones in room (still no TV, and probably never will be TV). We also take VISA credit or debit cards.
