Asunción's Aeropuerto Internacional Silvio Pettirossi (ASU) is 15 km (9 mi) northeast of downtown. The only U.S. carrier serving Paraguay is American, which flies from Miami via São Paulo. Paraguay's national airline, TAM Mercosur, likely the world's only airline that serenades departing passengers with harp music, does not fly directly to the United States; rather, it connects in São Paulo with its affiliate TAM Brazilian Airlines's daily Miami flights and its three weekly flights to both New York and Paris.
TAM Mercosur has daily service between Asunción and Ciudad del Este (AGT), Concepción (CID), and Vallemí (VMI). South American carriers that serve Asunción include Aerolíneas Argentinas, Bolivia's LAB, Uruguay's Pluna, and Brazil's Varig.
Taxis are the most practical means of getting to town, and they charge a fixed rate of G84,000. The airport information desk can tell you the exact rate. It can also arrange for an omnibus special whenever there are six or more passengers. This costs G35,000 per person and will take you to any address in downtown Asunción. Less conveniently, Bus 30A leaves from the tollbooths on the road into the airport (about 200 meters from the terminal). It departs for downtown Asunción every 15 minutes; the fare is G2,000.
