Although Asunción has escaped the crime typical of other South American capitals, there is still a small amount of petty crime against tourists. As in any urban area, be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on all valuables. Leave flashy jewelry and expensive watches in your hotel safe (or better yet, back home) and keep laptops and cameras in an inconspicuous bag.
