Quito uses a 911 telephone number to handle most emergencies. The private Hospital Metropolitano, northwest of the city, has many English speakers on staff and is accustomed to dealing with foreigners. The Naciones Unidas branch of the ubiquitous Pharmacys chain is open 24 hours.
