Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, but off-limits until recently due to the conflict, San Agustín preserves the relics of an advanced pre-Colombian culture that thrived in the area for more than seven centuries. This Agustinian culture is now protected and cherished and on show in verdant parks in the environs of San Agustín, where visitors can stroll back through the centuries marveling at anthropomorphic sculptures symbolizing fertility, maternity, and the alter ego. Outside Semana Santa, visitors will not have trouble finding rooms in decent accommodations in converted colonial homes.
San Agustín has become one of Colombia's most prized coffee-growing regions, and though formal tourism infrastructure here is lacking, there are plenty of opportunities to head out to local farms.
