Fodor's Expert Review Hotel de la Ópera

Calle 10 No. 5–72, Bogotá, Bogota D.C., 111711, Colombia

This pair of colonial buildings adjacent to the Teatro Colón in La Candelaria found new life as an elegant hotel. The sleek tile and polished hardwood floors throughout are remarkable, as is the chic furniture imported from Italy. The generously proportioned rooms have high ceilings and huge windows, and some have balconies that open out onto a quiet side street. The Mediterranean cuisine at the hotel's restaurant, La Scala, is wonderful, while regional dishes are accompanied by spectacular views at El Mirador, on the top floor. There is a first-rate spa, too.

PROS

  • the views are astonishing, particularly from top-floor rooms
  • service is impeccable
  • great restaurant

CONS

  • avoid Calle 10's unofficial guides and beggars
