Converting cash can be a bureaucratic headache, particularly in smaller towns like Chaitén. A better option is using your ATM card at numerous local banks connected to Cirrus or Plus networks.

When you're anticipating smaller purchases, try to have coins and small bills on hand at all times. Small vendors do not always have change for large bills.
