The Guest House Review

The aroma of fresh coffee greets you all day long at this B&B, a restored 1926 mansion just a couple of blocks from downtown. Period furnishings and antiques fill the cheery rooms. Vicki Johnson, Guest House's exuberant American owner, is a longtime resident of Chile and a fountain of information. In summer, reserve ahead.

This didn't live up to the above hype. The place was spotlessly clean and great effort had been taken to present am image of shabby gentility. We stayed for a week and Vicki Johnson was conspicuous by her absence at the guest house (even though she was around in PV). Staff were pleasant and helpful but spoke very limited English, apart from an American girl who worked Saturday and Sunday mornings. The water took 5-10 minutes to run warm and would then cut out suddenly going cold for 5 minutes and then hot again. There was no wardrobe in our room and no coat hangers provided. The only hanging space was 3 hooks on the back of the bedroom door and another 3 on a wall. The room was not very big and there was nowhere to put suitcases - they had to stay on the floor. The window could be only be opened fully and was held in position by a small hook. If there was any wind it would rattle and you had visions of it blowing off the catch and breaking. The bed was very comfortable but the chocolates were provided the first night only! There is secure parking - but you line up nose to tail beside the house - a potential problem for those wanting to be away early in the morning.
The guest house is also directly opposit the school. When we arrived the school kids were sitting on the steps (bad first impression). There was noise from the loud speakers in the gym. On street parking on both sides of the road when school started in the morning or if there was an event on during the day meant it could be difficult getting in or out of the gate into the guest house.
Breakfast was served at a communal table in the hall. Service was slow. It wasn't over generous. The web site refers to an "American breakfast" We are not sure what that means but the breakfast was similar to elsewhere in Chile.
