Hotel Centinela

Península de Centinela, 5 km (3 miles) south of Puerto Octay, Puerto Octay, Los Lagos, 5370000, Chile

Simple and elegant, the venerable 1912 Hotel Centinela has seen better days but remains one of Chile's best-known accommodations. This wood-shingled lodge with a dramatic turret sits amid 20 forested acres at the tip of Península Centinela jutting into Lago Llanquihue. Britain's Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, was the most famous guest (but there's some mystery as to whether his future wife, American divorcée Wallis Simpson, accompanied him). Imposing beds and armoires fill the huge rooms in the main building. The cabins include three meals a day delivered to the door.
