Fodor's Review

One block east of the Plaza de Armas is a pink colonial mansion that belonged to Albano Pereira, a tutor of national hero Bernardo O'Higgins. As Chile's first president, O'Higgins signed the country's proclamation of independence in this house in February 1818. Declared a national monument in 1971, it now houses the city's fine-arts museum, which has a collection of more than 500 paintings by local artists and a display covering the city's history from colonial to modern

times.
