Casa Higueras
At a Glance
- a rare spot of luxury in Valparaiso
Pros
- the rest of the street could benefit from a paint job
Cons
Casa Higueras Review
The hills of Valparaiso have enjoyed a boom of boutique hotels in the last decade but this one is a cut above the rest. Tucked behind the Baburizza palace, the new hotel includes many luxuries that one could only otherwise find in hotels in Viña or Santiago, including an outdoor pool, an elevator, a small spa, and a private garden, a rare treat in crowded Valpo. Dark wooden floors and corridors create a calm interior in contrast to the bustle outside, and the views across the bay and back up the hill are spectacular.

Hillside Haven Amidst Hubbub
This stylish city hotel, tucked into a steep hill in a residential neighborhood, offers a rare oasis of calm in bustling Valparaiso. Dark wood interiors, modern furnishings, and spacious rooms with phenomenal views offer respite after you've navigated the port's many steep hills. Owner Gonzalo Velasco has maintained many original features of this 1920s hillside mansion that was once at the heart of Valpo's intellectual life and today forms part of the city's UNESCO World Heritage area. But newer amenities, including terraced gardens and an outdoor pool and lounge overlooking the port, are welcome additions.
