The Southern Debate

The Southern Debate

The southernmost town on the globe, Puerto Williams, is just above the 55th parallel. It's closer to the South Pole than to the northern border of Chile. Bigger, and just to the northeast of Puerto Williams, is Ushuaia, Argentina, the world's southernmost city. At least, that's how the Argentineans describe it. The Chileans like to say that Puerto Williams is a city, too, resenting how Ushuaia has claimed that moniker in its tourist literature. Visit both, and decide for yourself.
