The Sendero de Chile ("Chilean path") trail system is one of the most ambitious trekking trail projects in the world, over 9,700 km (6,000 mi) of trails when completed in 2010. This is one of many initiatives the government kicked off to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Chile's 1810 independence from Spain. The aim is to create an ecological connection across the country—through deserts, mountains, valleys, forest, and glaciers—to demonstrate the natural and cultural diversity of Chile. One of the major stated goals underlying the government's initiative is to raise awareness for conservation and the protection of the environment. The path is designed to fill the need for safe public access to natural spaces inside the country for Chileans and tourists. All the infrastructure—signs, refuges, camping areas, bridges—is geared towards reducing human impact on the natural environment. Keep up with the progress at senderodechile.cl.
