What was once a simple seafood stand has taken over almost all the interior of Mercado Central. If you don't mind the unhurried service and the odd tear in the tablecloth, you may have the time of your life dining on everything from sea urchins to baby eel. Placido Domingo eats here on every visit to Chile, attended to by the white-bearded Segovian Augusto Vasquez, who has run Donde Augusto for more than four decades. Go for simple dishes like the corvina plancha (grilled sea bass), which is mouthwateringly good. Get here early, as it closes at 6 PM.

Nowhere in the Fodor's book does it tell you that you will be hustled by the various restaurant employees in the Mercado Central... now consider yourself warned! I agree with the other reviewer that once you decide to eat at Donde Augusto, the service declines dramatically, and the new goal is to get you out as soon as possible while spending the most amount of money. We shared sub-par empanadas, too-tough razor clams, and conger eel, which was actually quite good and not overcooked. The waiter told us he would bring us the check after we ordered another pisco sour. We didn't order one out of principle. Bottom line, the conger eel was very good, but if you can get good seafood at another (albeit more expensive) place, do it.

Horribly overpriced considering the poor quality of food and service. We should have gone with our initial impression that we were being hustled into a tourist trap, but having read so many positive comments we went along and had our worst restaurant experience in Chile. We felt rushed to order and rushed to settle the tab. The only thing not rushed was the preparation and serving of our meal, which seemed to take forever. If you are looking for excellent seafood there are any number of places far better for the price, for example, Azul Profundo.
