Over the past decade, the mosquito that transmits dengue fever has established itself on Easter Island. Only the mild form of the fever has been reported, and there have been no fatalities. Beware of the sun—with the island's breeze, it's easy to underestimate its strength, and if you're planning to walk or bicycle take plenty of water. Locals will tell you that there's been an increase in crime, but Easter Island must be one of the safest places in the world.
