Refugia Lodge Review
Many things converge at Refugia, a rustic-luxe 12-room lodge located on about 25 acres on the Rilan peninsula, including the sea and forest, nature and architecture, high design and a rich local history. The 12-room hotel has views spanning from wildflower-topped hills and Pullao wetlands to the rugged coastline, islands, and Andean mountain tops. The edge-of-the-world feel is echoed in the intimate set-up: the main lodge has a reading room, fireplace lounge, dining area and terrace, all made using indigenous wood and traditional local crafts like wickerwork. All guest rooms are on the second floor, with sea views and streamlined, wood-and-wool interiors. At the sole restaurant, the chef's daily menu features local bounty and fresh seafood, while a small spa houses a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam, and one massage room. The hotel offers a full roster of guided excursions, from active (horseback rides, trekking, boating) to cultural (visits of villages, national parks, and UNESCO Heritage sites.) Rates include all meals and local drinks, roundtrip transport from Castro's airport, daily excursions, and use of the spa.
