Fodor's Review

The main chapel of the Mosteiro de São Bento, a Benedictine monastery, is Olinda's richest church and considered to be one of Brazil's most beautiful. Brilliant gold covers the elaborately carved wooden altar and frames the sumptously furnished private balconies that overlook it, providing a dramatic contrast with the white walls and frescoed ceilings. It once housed the nation's first law school. Sunday's 10 am mass features Gregorian chants.
