Santarém, at the hub of two different river systems and forests, has a lot of outdoor options. Secluded beaches for swimming, forest trails for hiking, boats for exploring backwater areas and wildlife-watching—they're all here. Bosque Santa Lúcia. An American who knows the area particularly well is Steven Alexander, who has been living down here for nearly 30 years. He leads ecotours on occasion, especially to a forest preserve he has created outside town called Bosque Santa Lúcia. It has several trails with tree identification tags, troops of monkeys, and lots of birds and insects.
