Fodor's Review

Right next door to La Girl, this is, unsurprisingly, a gay-male mecca. DJs play pop and house music nightly, and outrageous stage shows often take place.

Le Boy Review

I am presently in Rio on Holiday. I have been going to Le Boy for over 5 years when I travel here twice a year. This place has gone way downhill and has become extremely "anti-grino". First when I got there the doormen/bouncers said they would not open until 11pm. I had arrived about 10. I was one of the few "gringos" around. He directed me to their "sauna" which is next door. Really a glorified bath house. They charged me $R30 to enter and

explained that at 11 I could enter the club. The first told me I had to disrobe, their rule, and could only wear a towel and havianas and the key to the safe. The place was completely dead, however the staff here were very polite. I worked out or attempted to in their small gym. It was dirty and most of the equipment non functional. I made the best of it worked out read papers and watched television. No body was in there but two other guys kind of older. When 11pm rolled around, I put my clothes back on and went to the entrance door. The bouncers pretty much igonored me when I asked them to enter. I went in and they wanted me to pay again. I said no. Left went next door back to the sauna to explain the problem. The gentlemen that worked there called the club and told them to let me in. I went over there, they refused again and asked me to pay. I asked for the manager. He called the sauna, and I showed him my receipt. He aplogized and the entry staff rudely put the white entrace band and did not say hello welcome, nothing. I then go downstairs to the disco, and you have to buy coupons at a kiosk like window. I bought some for water and beer. The bartenders were very nice. The transgender person at the kiosk very rude and poorly dressed for a place that is supposed to be upscale. It is smaller than it used to be, and they took out the mirrors on the wall and one of the dance stages. Very dirty floors and old equipment piled in corners, ripped dirty seats. There were supposed to be 4 dancers putting on a show with all these ballons. The could not dance well at all and their "show" never happened. I happen to be a good dancer having learned at a young age. Everyone then began packing the dancefloor. I was going back and forth to get beer and water alternating. Including the sauna I had drank 3 and one half beers in the span of 4 hours. I danced for almost 2 hours straight the music excellent. I am a light smoker and went outside to the small smoke area that is where the nightmare for me began. It is off season but outside were some friendly Cariocas smoking with me. I was very tired from a long flight I arrived from earlier that day from Europe and jet lag. There is one small bench in the area that was occupied so I sat on kind of these steps. I see the doorman staring at me like I was doing something wrong. I saw him letting his friends in the place was getting crowded and a line was forming, but those already in the smoking area get to just walk back in, but not me...This same doorman that was giving me a hard time before roughly grabbed me by the arm, took some scisors and cut my arm band off and told me to go. I said why he said you are drunk. I said I am not and asked for the manager. I understand portuguese some and he was telling the manager I was so drunk I had to sit down because I could not stand up. I told the manager who spoke english, I was somewhat tired, but by no means intoxicated. He said he had to side with his staff. Who was standing next to him smiling the jerk doorman. I told the manager this is ridiculous and I want all my money back. He refused and would not let me in. The door man laughed and pointed to his wedding ring. He spoke to me in english. He said see this Im normal you aren't where are you from, I said Sweden originally. He said oh I hear all of you Swede meen are queers. I am level headed and calm the manager returned and I caught his attention and told him what the doorman said. He denied it. The manager says to me if you wait ten minutes then I will let you back in. I stood around for over 20 minutes before he returned. This now had been going on for an hour. Now the doorman is tellign him he thinks I'm using drugs. I spoke up on that one, I said look I drink a little beer some a few cigarettes a day, but I am an athlete and dancer. What is this slander. The doorman is laughing. The said sorry, if my staff see you as a problem I must side with them. I said I was going to call the police and he did not like this. He said you cant come in but do what you want but not on our phones. I again said I want my money back. I had a yellow coupon and he comes back with a water and a BEER! I am not joking. He then left. The doorman was still taunted me. His last words to me was this is a place for my friends the Cariocas. We don't like Eurpeans like you. I said please call me a taxi, he refused and yelled to the taxi drivers not to give me a ride. He laughed and said go away. You gave your yellow paper and now the Swede queeer has a beer. I am no pushover and he was doing everything in his power to get me into an altercation so he could call the police. I walked to the nearast Tourist police station. They were polite but not sypatheric at all. The say if you go to such places, then you can expect trouble always. Inferring obviously that there was something wrong with me goign to a gay bar. They said they could do nothing as with no witness it is my word against theres. Luckily some friends showed me some nicer smaller clubs that were much more fun with better staff so I wasn't going to let some rude staff at Le Boy ruin my holiday. I then thought of fodors, I have you guide for Brazil. This is a true and honest review. One thing for certain, I will never ever go back to this disco. Le Boy, what a horrible way to treat non Brazilian patrons...
