Cariocas divide their city into three sections: Zona Norte (North Zone), Zona Sul (South Zone), and Centro, the downtown area that separates the other two. Aside from museums, churches, and historic sights, most tourist activity is in beach- and hotel-laden Zona Sul, primarily in Copacabana and Ipanema. Centro is filled with the remnants of the old Portuguese colony, including some impressive neoclassical architecture.
