It's been well over a century since Bar Luiz first opened its doors—it's been at this location since 1927—and you could be excused for thinking that little has changed since, including the affable waiters. Claiming the best chopp (draft beer) in the city would arouse controversy from a lesser venue, but few in Rio would bother to argue. Tasty sausages and other German favorites are the culinary specialty; locals pop in for simple meals such as white bratwurst
with potato salad dressed in a singular homemade mayonnaise. The chopp comes in light and dark varieties, both served estupidamente gelado (stupidly cold). The wooden tables, tiled floor, and wall-mounted photographs of old Rio combine to create a pleasingly nostalgic ambience.
